“In a year that has been so improbable, the impossible has happened!”  No, those aren’t the words of Saugus High School varsity football coach Jason Bornn, and they’re not the words of Principal Vince Ferry either.

That is the timeless quote from legendary Dodgers broadcaster Vin Scully from the 1988 World Series, but the quote can just as easily apply to this season’s varsity football team.

The 2020-2021 school year has been so unpredictable and filled with lots of disappointments, but one bright spot for Saugus happened on Friday, April 16 when the varsity football team won the Foothill League title for the first time since 2008.

The game against rival Valencia High School at Valencia ended in a 21-7 victory for the Cents. The win also broke Valencia’s 11 year league winning streak.

Quarterback Colton Fitzgerald had an amazing game throwing three touchdown passes for 170 yards. One of the most difficult plays was off a bad snap and he threw a pass to Dario Sandoval to give Saugus more than enough with 5:11 left in the game.

Coach Bornn asked his team one thing this season: “Don’t tap out.”  And they did not, with a 5-0 record to show for it.
