As of late the country has been especially torn and many things have become controversial due to it. One major controversial topic is the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, more commonly known as ICE. In 2025 and in early 2026 ICE has been rising in controversy. Some of the biggest incidents took place in Los Angeles in June of 2025 and in Minnesota of early 2026.
In June of 2025 ICE made several raids which sparked outrage in much of the country but mostly in Los Angeles where the raids actually took place. People promptly rushed to streets and protested through the day and into the night. This lasted many days and some protesters became violent and police and ICE were throwing peeper balls and using tear gas to disperse the crowds. On June 7th Donald Trump signed a memorandum which deployed 2,000 members of the national guard. The protests persisted deep into June and events did not end in Los Angeles until mid July when trips were finally withdrawn.
In January of 2026 ICE made a big boom in Minnesota. On the 7th of the month Renée Good was shot multiple times in her car by the ICE agent Jonathan Ross this shooting took her life. Donald Trump and other law enforcement officers defended Agent Ross saying that the shooting was self defense and she had run him over with her car. However, eye witnesses contest this account saying that she didn’t hit him and he murdered Good. Of course this broke the internet, both sides fought, either defending the agent or calling him a murderer.
This topic is so conversational that many of the people I tried to interview refused to be put in the article, but one person didn’t mind, as long as they were anonymous. A student here at Saugus High School says that they believe the border should be harder to get past. Regarding ICE however, they don’t support their actions and the way they act. This seems to be a common occurrence.
Recently (as of January 23) a 5 year old boy and his dad have been detained. Pictures can be seen of Ice holding the boy’s backpack. Many are against this, though the DHS defends this action with claims of looking for “the worst of the worst illegal aliens”. The boy and his father are being held in a detention center in San Antonio, Texas.
ICE may be the most controversial topic right now. Many people are against ICE, seeing their actions as criminal and against the law and many are for, thinking they’re doing right, cleansing the country from criminals. This topic is currently dividing the U.S. and is creating hatred between the right and left and violence between agents and civilians.
