On Sunday, October 19th 2025 one of the most famous museums was robbed. The Louvre, home of many statues, jewels, and many paintings such as the Mona Lisa. Four men broke into The Louvre and stole earrings, an emerald necklace, two crowns, brooches, sapphire necklaces. Getting away with 88 million euros which equals about 102 million usd.
October 19th 2025, two men ascended a ladder, dressed as construction workers and used an angle grinder to break the window. The thieves entered the Apollo Gallery and threatened security guards with the angle grinders. They then stole the eight pieces of jewelry. This was partially so easy because the Denon halls where the gallery is located does not have cameras in one third of them, which makes it less noticeable.
After stealing the eight pieces of jewelry, the men escaped on scooters. Many witnesses say that the thieves seemed experienced in the craft. About 60 investigators also say that they believe that the robbers were taking orders from a criminal organization. Another unexpected thing is that many people were rooting for the robbers.
Recently four suspects have been taken into custody. A 34 year old man who formerly worked as a trash collector, a 39 year old man who worked as a taxi driver, a 37 year old man, and a 38 year old woman. The 37 year old man and the woman were domestic partners. Investigators believe that the 34 year old and the 39 year old were the ones who had initially scaled the ladder and entered the gallery.
The 34 year old suspect was arrested before boarding a flight to Algeria because his DNA had been found on one of the scooters that were used to flee from the museum. He has lived in France since the year 2010. The 39 year old man’s DNA had been found on the glass cases and where the jewels had been in the case. He has also been known for committing theft in the past. He told police that he works as a taxi driver, who operates illegally. Laure Beccuau says that both men have somewhat admitted to being involved in the heist in some way.
The 37 year old man was taken into custody because his DNA was found in the lift basket. He does not admit any wrongdoing, saying had no involvement in the heist. This man also has a history of convictions, 10 of them being theft. The 38 year old woman was taken into custody because she may have been an accomplice. Her DNA was also found in the basket on the lift, though she denies any participation in the actions of the heist.
None of the stolen items have been recovered and investigators are still searching for them. If they do not find the jewelry it will be a major loss for the country of France like losing a piece of their history. Former Journalist, Candace Wrenn says “They should have better security” this regards the fact that the Louvre has countless halls with priceless items. These items also hold significant weight in history.
Again many people on the internet have been not wanting the perpetrators to be caught, many also believe that they will be attractive. On the popular app TikTok many people can be seen in comment sections talking about them. Under one video talking about the arrest of the suspects someone can be seen saying “Who snitched”. This shows the love that the thieves got. The thieves were praised and wanted to get away. This sparked outrage among many people on the internet.
