In September of 2025 many young Nepalis people, who called themselves Gen-Z protesters, flooded the streets and buildings of Nepal. They burnt down buildings because they asked for reforms. They beat and chased the people in power all over Nepal. This event was not caused by one thing, the main reasons being the ban on 26 social media platforms and corruption in the government.
One of the main reasons young people took to the streets was because the government was planning to ban 26 social media platforms. This ban was planned to help lower hate and cool tensions surrounding the government. The hate for the government stemmed from the way the citizens saw many of the children of leaders in Nepal. This ban was huge because of the populations’ activity on the platforms. Many people used these platforms to connect with others, this connection included people with family members and also people advertising business, so this ban was a major loss for many of Nepal’s people. An even bigger reason is they felt that the government was silencing them and their voices. Because of this many young people flooded the streets in protest, of course because of this violent protesting the police were dispatched. The police used rubber bullets, tear gas, and even live ammunition. When the first day passed 19 people had been killed. Because much of Nepal’s Gen-Z generation is unemployed, thousands apply for work permits to work abroad. In fact, over 3 million Nepalese work abroad, bringing in much of Nepal’s money and keeping it up. This divide by the ban and the people’s connection in and out was cut, it led to outrage. Overall the divide that was formed by the limit on social media led to outrage among young people in Nepal.
Another reason was the disconnect between leaders and the public, including economic disparity and corruption. Some of this economic disparity was seen online when leaders’ children were seen living lavishly, with expensive, non-essential things. This was apparently very appalling to the people of Nepal who would not be able to afford the things they see these people with. Another reason the people thought the government was disconnected was because of the ban of social media, which the people felt was to silence the young peoples’ thoughts and feelings, especially when the people were pointing out corruption in the people in power.
Overall the people of Nepal were sick of the corruption in the government and silencing, because of this Nepal’s government faced the peoples’ price. A new prime minister, non restricted social media use were some of the things gained from this revolution. However, there were losses too, several people lost their lives while protesting against the government.
