
The American alternative rock band out of Newbury Park, California called The Neighbourhood has claimed its fame over the years, obtaining massive popularity all over the world. Their raw and emotion packed songs have captivated millions. The band began with the lead vocalist Jesse Rutherford, the two guitarists Jeremey Freedman and Zack Abels, along with the bassist Mikey Marrgot and drummer Bryan Sammis. Bryan later left the group and was replaced by Brandon Fried.
The group formed in 2011 and since then has flourished in the music industry. Early into 2012, they released their first two singles “Female Robbery” and “Sweater Weather” which lead them to come out with their first EP called “I’m Sorry…”. Later that year in December, their second EP was released titled “Thank You”. The band performed at Coachella in 2013, leading up to the premiere of their album “I Love You” on April 16 that was officially released on April 23. Within its first week, it made number 39 on the US Billboard 200 chart and sold thousands. The music video for the most popular track on the album, “Sweater Weather” was released on March 5, 2013 which led the band to make its first television appearance on the Jimmy Kimmel Live show. In June 2013, the hit topped the Billboard Alternative Song chart. To help boost their success, in July and September they opened for the popular band Imagine Dragons. Within that same summer, they played in Eastern Canada, performing as one of the headliners of Toronto’s Edgefest on the 31 of July. They then went on to play at several other festivals like Osheaga in Montreal on August 4, and at Music Midtown in Atlanta on September 21.
In April of 2013, the band declared their tour named The Love Collection Tour which included the 1975, Lovelife, and JMSN. Along with that, they announced they were planning on coming out with a mixtape. A new EP was released on December 10 called The Love Collection. In the following year of 2014, it was announced on social media that Brandon Sammis would be leaving the group. A long awaited project was released for free on November 28, 2014 named #000000 & #FFFFFF. They then released their second album, Wiped Out! on October 30 that gained large success. A track from the album called “R.I.P. 2 My Youth” soon made number 13 on the US Billboard 200. To put the spotlight on the album, the group went on a European tour in November of 2015 and an American tour in May and July.
A new EP titled “Hard” was released on September 21, 2017 which later reached 183 on the US Billboard 200 chart. An additional EP was released a couple of months later on January 12, 2018 named “To Imagine”. A third studio album titled “The Neighbourhood” was put out on March 9, 2018 which contained songs from the EP’s from before. The extended plays leftover that were not included on that track list were put into a different EP called “Hard to Imagine”. Later on, a finalized album was released titled “Hard to Imagine the Neighbourhood Ever Changing”, however it excluded the two songs “Too Serious” and “Revenge”.
A single called “The Middle of Somewhere” and music video came out on August 16, 2019. A couple of months later on October 10, 2019, another single came out named “Yellow Box” that was in an action game called Death Stranding. A little more than half way into 2020, the group announced their fourth album that was later released on September 25 with the name Chip Chrome and Mono-Tones. Towards the end of 2020, their songs “Sweater Weather” and “Daddy Issues” went viral on Tiktok, which boosted their streams.
In the beginning of 2022, the band unfortunately announced their hiatus. Further pushing back their return, the band released to the public that Brandon Fried, the drummer, would no longer be in the group after being accused of sexually assaulting the Marias’ lead vocalist, Maria Zardoya. Over the last couple years of their hiatus, fans continued to support and listen to the band, hoping for a comeback.
On August 25, The Neighbourhood posted a story on their Instagram account announcing their return. They also announced that Brandon Fried would be coming back to the band after stepping away from the group to focus on his recovery from substance abuse. On October 12, they hosted an event, interacting with fans. Recently, they’ve been posting stories of them appearing to be creating music. On October 22, they posted a story announcing that new music was set to be released the next day. On October 23, 2025, their new single was released titled “Private”. It contains three tracks: “Private”, “OMG”, and “Lovebomb”. Their newest album, named “(((((ultraSOUND)))))”, was also announced on October 23, set to come out on November 14, 2025. It includes the three songs previously listed along with 12 others.
We spoke to Anatalia Mariano who told us she is a fan of The Neighbourhood. In the interview, we asked Anatalia what she liked best about the music group. To this she replied, “Obviously, this is a varying opinion, but I like the sense of familiarity. The Neighbourhood has a kind of style that gives off a unique effect when listening – something that tells you it’s them. I don’t know if it’s the vocals or the beat, but I love it.” Their music and presence as a whole is special and valued by their fanbase. The Neighbourhood’s hard work has truly earned them their spot in the industry and are bound to see even more success in the future!
