At the heart of every classroom is a teacher who cares for their students, Saugus is blessed to have many of these teachers, just like Mr.Ballard. Mr.Ballard teaches various different subjects including psychology, sociology, and social studies. Mr.Ballard makes complex psychology topics like behavior and conflict theories into more digestible pieces of information to make it easier for students to process. Not only is Mr.Ballard a great teacher, but he is also extremely compassionate and makes sure to create a bond with each of his students, leaving a positive lasting impression on each and every one of his students.
Mr.Ballard has been teaching psychology at Saugus for many years and says that he’s “always been fascinated by people. How we think, communicate, and why we behave the way we do. Teaching my lessons helps students not only understand their own feelings, but the feelings of those around them too. I recommend everyone take psychology because it’s the study of the mind and of empathy”. Mr.Ballard’s love for psychology goes past what he teaches in the classroom. He believes learning human behavior is a skill that benefits students in all different aspects of their lives. Ballard often reminds the class that psychology isn’t about memorizing behavioral patterns–its about seeing the world through someone’s else’s perspective.
In the beginning of the second semester, psychology switches to sociology, allowing students to explore more social structures, and group behaviors. Mr.Ballard loves to “explore how people act in group settings, how different cultures act, and how society influences people; however psychology always has a special place in my heart.” Mr Ballard said that he “always preferred to teach psychology because [he] likes to help students better understand themselves on a deeper, more personal level. Learning about the brain, emotions and behavior can be a real eye-opener for students”. Despite his love for psychology he also has talked about how he likes that “Sociology helps students see the bigger picture. It encourages them to think about social issues, relationships, and how different communities function”. Overall , Mr.Ballard’s passion for both subjects is clear. By teaching both psychology and sociology, he gives students the opportunity to become more self aware.
In conclusion, Mr.Ballard is more than just a teacher at Saugus, he is a mentor who inspires students to understand both themselves and the group of people around them. Ballard’s compassion and dedication leave a lasting impact on students, making his classroom a place where learning is meaningful and personal. Mr.Ballard’s commitment to teaching truly makes a difference in the lives of those he teaches.
