Model UN (United Nations) is a club where students get to simulate being diplomats, research an assigned country’s history and policies, research how that country plays into a large global issue, and debate other students at Mock UN Trials to create resolutions. The job of the UN is to cooperate with other countries on global issues like climate change, poverty, and human rights to achieve common goals. credit
Saugus High School Model UN will consist of two separate meetings: General Meetings and Model UN Trials.
General Meetings are assemblies of all club members where topics regarding Saugus student-based issues are discussed. Members will be required to participate regularly in discussions and contribute ideas, working as a collective student body. The President and Vice President will conduct the meetings where members will share ideas and discuss issues concerning Saugus and the Santa Clarita Community.
Treasurers will announce ideas for fundraisers, and gain feedback from club members. Treasurers are also in charge of media management to gain traction and interest for the club. Members are also encouraged to share ideas of their own concerning fundraising ideas and ideas for reforms in the community. Volunteering and service opportunities will be discussed in meetings, with regard to certain issues the UN discusses with each other: humanitarian aid, climate/recycling action, and food aid–in Santa Clarita.
Secretary records minutes, tracks ideas, and creates summaries of General Meetings for later use. The President and Vice President will create agendas for meetings and read off slides. At the end of each https://megaphone.southwestern.edu/2016/03/03/su-welcomes-first-model-united-nations-club/ meeting, members interested in participating in Model UN Trials will be assigned countries, and the respective topics to be discussed at the Trials will be revealed. After each meeting, members will have 2-3 weeks of preparation time for the Trial, where they will research their designated country and create position papers.
Model UN Trials will consist of members who have attend General Meetings. After position papers are created, they will be given to the Chair: President and Vice President, who will then conduct the Trial. Diplomats will then debate each other on the assigned topics and create a resolution paper with their chosen groups. Amendments will be introduced by diplomats and they will work together to create a final resolution to solve the given issue, with the interests of each country in mind.
During UN trials, the Secretary will create an in-depth summary of the Trial for members to look back on and for those who did not attend. Members who participate the most, show leadership, and create meaningful amendments will win prizes.
Saugus Model UN is a club for those interested in creating meaningful change in the community, and/or participating in condensed Model UN Trials. “I recommend joining if you would like to pursue a career in diplomacy, government, law, or anything history related,” Says secretary Guadalupe Saldivar, who was a fundamental part of creating the club.
