In honor of the new year of 2025, the Government of California has decided to create new laws to ensure the people of California are safer and healthier, people living in cities are treated equally, and to be more strict on people doing bad crimes. Throughout the year in 2024, there was much needed improvement in the economy as there were numerous cases of crimes in California, people not feeling comfortable in schools, and not spreading the religious and gender equality around the State. The main new laws that have been created include, more harsh punishments to people stealing cars or merchandise, ban on gender notification in schools, not allowing public libraries to ban books, and the ban on red 40.
Firstly, the new law of creating more severe and harsh discipline consequences to people vandalizing property. The Governor of California, Gavin Newsom took responsibility for making this law. Gavin Newsom proclaimed that there were gonna be harsh penalties for retail theft, property theft, and smash and grab robberies taking place throughout local business so people doing these things are being arrested or tracked down faster and easier. Consequently, this will make it easier for the Police Department to get the person responsible for the crimes accountable. Therefore, it is now considered a felony to break this law, Newsom took very consideration of the people getting affected by this.
Next, the ban on gender notification in schools is going to be effective immediately. This law means that schools are not allowed to inform parents or guardians about their child using pronouns or changing their gender identity to something else. In addition, this will make students who are a part of LGBTQ+ more comfortable at school to be themselves and not have to live behind the dark of who they truly are. Many students have been afraid that if they can open up to be who they are at school, that school administrators can tell their parents and it will affect the point of view parents have on them. Ultimately, some students have trouble coming out to their parents so school is a way of escaping reality to build up to be who they want to be.
Upcoming, public libraries are not allowed to ban books regarding gender identity, politics, race, religion, and disability. Public libraries as well can’t ban books relating to an author. In summary, this will make readers more open to serious related topics.
Finally, the next law coming to infect is the ban on the dye red 40. Red 40 is a chemical dye that is mainly used in syrups, food, and drinks which causes gut health problems, a link to cancer, and immune system problems. There are many natural dyes that are more improved than red 40. The ban of the dye will make people eating foods that contain red 40 more safer.
In summary, these laws are set to make California better in the economy to make certain of fairness, health, and safety. The Government Department is in careful care of making sure the Citizens of California are looked out for. This new year is a fresh beginning to see what laws need to be changed or more laws to be instituted.

Which law do you think will make the most impact in California?
“I think the law of making extreme punishments for vandalizing property will make a huge difference because as a 911 Dispatcher, there are a large number of calls of hit and runs so when businesses are getting destroyed, making this law easier for the Police Department to punish the vandalizer.”
What do you think of the law of banning red 40?
“The law of banning red 40 is definitely a good decision because I get calls of young kids getting allergic reactions from the dye so many kids are sent to the hospital to get treated. The dye will make sure people are healthy and safe from eating treats, drinks, or foods.”
How will laws change California?
“Laws will change California by changing the way people are educated, treated, and cared for. Additionally, I think these new laws are what we need as a community to create a better system for wellness.”
