Santa Clarita Elementary School had recently closed down during the summer of 2024 after a multitude of reasons that had unfortunately caused the ultimate decision to close down the school. Many reasons had transpired for the closing of the school with most of the reasons being due to money issues that had been aware of in the school ever since 2014 due to how old the buildings structures were being 60 years old. Within a board meeting in 2022 it had been reportedly said by school administrators it would cost upwards of 24 million dollars to earthquake proof the school so that it could be up to code with California school standards. That hadn’t been all that was needed to be paid though as due to old structuring, remediation had cost upwards of 8.5 million dollars and replacements of things in the school costing 9.5 million dollars.
As reportedly said in an email by Heinlein, “The state will push you to replace an entire building”. With all of the costly things needed to be paid it must have been overwhelming for the school to deal with overall and with almost over 900 students leaving the school reportedly in 2023 it must’ve been hard to deal with all of the issues. The school had been first opened on July 1st 1960 and had unfortunately closed on June 8th 2024 with a majority of the community voting for the closing of it. Students at the school had until the date January 15th to send a request to transfer schools with reports by Hawkins that every student had successfully made it into a school for the next school year. Finally on May 18th 2024, a party had been held for all the students currently attending the school for the final day that students would attend. I had tried to reach out to one of the students that had been at the school prior to the recent closure for an interview but unfortunately they did not reach back.
