Game Themes
Do you need help finding inspiration for football games? Well, it’s important to understand the origin of football games, first! Football has been popular ever since the first development of the technical sport in the 1920s. As the years grew old American football evolved and started to get even more popular in highschools as a fall sport. Along with the sport evolving, highschool students started to get more involved and use the games as an opportunity to bond with friends and shine their school spirit. Most high schoolers would wear letterman jackets, school uniforms, lots of layers, chunky jewelry, and comfy clothes to the games.
More years flew by and currently more and more highschool students are getting involved with the idea of football games. Although concepts of football stayed the same from the beginning, the attire people would wear changed completely. High school football games now are filled with a wide variety of fashion and even have a theme of what people should wear in order to show their school pride. Every football game, the themes are different. Some themes may include a certain color theme where you wear just one color. Other themes can be more creative and exciting. If you want to find out what theme to wear to the game, some helpful resources would be to look on the Saugus Football instagram page or tune in to SNN during the ASB minute.
Once you find out the theme, you’re going to want to try your best to make your outfit as close to the theme as possible in order to really stand out and represent school spirit. If you’re stuck on inspiration, this is the perfect place. When the season starts, the first well known football game is the homecoming game. This game is where you should show your school spirit the most no matter what theme it is.
Popular themes that we might see throughout the season are Blue Out, Aloha, Patriotic, Camo, Pink out, Neon out, and halloween. A very common theme for Saugus every year is a Blue out game. If the theme is blue, you’re going to obviously want to wear blue. Really anything blue is perfect but if you’re looking for more specifics you can wear a blue tank, t-shirt, or tube top. For bottoms you can wear white, blue, or black jean shorts. However, if it’s a colder night you can wear denim jeans or leggings. Now that you have the base of the outfit, pick out some shoes (blue would be perfect). Next you’re going to want to accessorize. A really common accessory at football games is face paint. You could use blue eye black or non-toxic blue paint to glamorize your face with pride. More quick accessories you could add on would be jewelry and bandanas.
Another theme that is really common during football games is Aloha. This theme has so many different possibilities of what you could wear. Some ideas for tops would be a Hawaiian shirt with a plain white tee or crop top underneath or you could just wear the white top. A pair of shoes you could put on could either be flip flops or sneakers. For accessories you can use paint again to do some cute designs or use white paint to make sunscreen marks. You could also put on a pair of your favorite shades and don’t forget a lei!
The next outfit inspiration for a theme is Patriotic. For this theme, a red, white, and blue color scheme would be perfect. An idea would be to wear a red top, blue denim shorts, and white sneakers or you could mix the colors up. Some accessories to put on would be a cowboy hat and some red white and blue body paint.
Camo is also a very common theme for football games. If you have camo jeans or a shirt, that would be the best option to pair up with a plain colored piece of clothing. However, most people don’t have camo so you could wear a black top with jean shorts. For accessories add some green face paint and get a camo bandana at any craft store for cheap. You can also add some hints of neon orange to the outfit if you’re going for a hunter look.
The next theme for inspiration is Pink Out and this one is guaranteed to be a theme in the season as it’s the most important. The Pink Out theme will be one of the themes for the games in October. As October is Breast Cancer Awareness month, school football teams honor this as making the theme wearing pink. So really anything pink is perfect but if you’re stuck there’s a lot of inspiration. A pink top with jean shorts is what is normally worn, but if you have pink shorts wear those! Pink face and body paint is also perfect for this theme.
Neon Out is the next theme and this one has plenty of creative fashion involved. You’re going to want to be the brightest person in the student section so the football players know their support. You could always wear just neon trendy clothes but if you want to have a little more fun with it you can dress as a construction worker. The construction vest is a very common thing you will see at neon games and sometimes people even wear the helmet too. For accessories facepaint is perfect for this theme. Get a pack of washable face paint from any store and do fun designs. You can look up some designs on pinterest. Saugus Junior and Volleyball player, Victoria Vacas reported on her outfit for last year’s neon game, “I already had a neon pink top, then I just bought some white pants from Goodwill and splattered Party City neon paint on it. I put neon paint in my hair and on my face, too! Neon is my favorite football game theme.”
The last common theme is halloween. This is normally the theme of the last league football game in october. This theme really makes people show their creativity because there are so many possibilities of what to wear. You could either find a whole new costume or just wear your halloween costume. If you don’t really want to wear a costume, put on a cute outfit with some scary or fun makeup. Some ideas for makeup would be Penny Wise, The Purge, and a skeleton.
This year be sure to show all your school spirit by participating and staying on theme. Football games only happen during the beginning of the school year so make sure you make the
