#1. The first fun place that everyone loves to travel to in the winter is New York. One activity you can do here is walk Times Square. Times Square is popular for the bright digital billboards, restaurants and special themed stores. Another thing you can do here is buy a ticket to get on the ferry ride to the Statue of Liberty and walk inside of it but reservations are required to get inside. Another thing you can do is watch the Saks Fifth Avenue light show for Christmas held at Eisenhower park on Long Island which also has a night that is “Nightmare Before Christmas” themed.
#2. Another great place to travel to is Utah. It is one of the best places to go skiing and snowboarding in the winter because it is known for the fluffy powdery snow which makes it easier whether you’re a beginner or an expert. It is also very easy to access ski resorts because many of them are less than an hour away from the Salt Lake City International Airport. There are also hot springs in Utah that you can relax in after a long day of skiing or snowboarding that will help you relax.
#3. Alaska is a beautiful place to travel to in the winter to go see The Northern Lights. The Northern Lights are seen best around 10:00pm-12:00am. One fact about the northern lights is that they are caused by solar activity and are about 400 miles away from the earth’s surface. You can also go to see the ice caves like the Mendenhall Glacier Ice Caves. This is one of the most popular glaciers to go see in Alaska.
#4 Vienna, Austria is like a real life winter wonderland. This town is popular for their magical christmas markets and amazing scenery. You can spend time here visiting the famous palace Schonbrunn and the Hofburg. Here you can also explore the Orangery Gardens, The Neptune fountain, The Gloriette, or The Tiergarten. If you enjoy music you may also like to go to the Vienna State Opera where you can hear live music and see the amazing architecture of the Wiener Staasoper.
#5 Lastly, a family favorite is Mammoth Mountain. Here you can take a lift on the Mountain Coaster to the top and snowboard or ski down the mountain. There are also hot springs nearby such as Wild Willies Hot Springs or Kio Hot springs. At these hot springs you can enjoy the views of the Long Valley Caldera, soak in the hot springs that can get up to 105 degrees, and you are also able to camp on these grounds as well.
I interviewed Saugus freshman Xavi Pentoja and asked him “If you could travel anywhere in the world in the winter, where would you go?” He replied “There are many places that you can go to but if i had to pick one i would pick The Bahamas”. The next question that I asked him was “Why would you want to travel to The Bahamas out of all places” and he replied “ I really enjoy summer and I feel like I would get the summer feeling when I need it most in winter”.
In the end, winter is one of the best times to travel and experience many places. From hitting the slopes to visiting a cozy town, there is always a destination that will appeal to all types of travelers. Travelling in the winter lets you see the world from a different point of view which is why it’s so special. Whether you love relaxing or going on many adventures, these winter destinations will provide you with all of that and everything in between and will leave you with unforgettable memories with family and friends.
