Trump the United States’ new 47th president has already been taking effect as president and has already set plans for new immigration policies. Trump has signed about 10 immigration orders, some of which are increased border security and mass deportations. Trump is still being a new president and his immediate effect on his new policies Immigration and Customs have already arrested 5,843 immigrants. Trump is also sending everyone that is undocumented to Guantanamo Bay to where a migrant detention center will take place. All these new policies of our new president have not only put fear into many immigrant cities and communities, but it has also started many protests.
In Los Angeles, California on February 6, we saw students from about seven different high schools walk the streets showing their ideas of defending immigrants due to Trump’s new policies . Some of the high schools that participated in the protest were Venice High, Westwood High, and Santa Monica High. The students walked throughout Los Angeles streets to express their ideas of Trump’s new policies. Later that same day people also stood in front of Los Angeles City Hall which led to the nationwide 50501 Movement which is 50 protests in all 50 states in which all the protesters delivered the same message “ Nobody is illegal” on signs. This call was for an end to Trump’s policies on deportation.
Another form of protesting that people were able to do against Trump and his new policies of increasing border control were Latino owned businesses around the southwest Detroit area shutting their doors. This movement was to support a “Day without Immigrants” and also show other immigrants to stop working, shopping, and to stop attending school to show to others
the importance they have on the community and the contributions they have on the U.S. economy. Similar occurrences happened in Los Angeles where people marched about the jobs immigrants took to help others.
Ethan Toledo, a ninth grader at Saugus High, was asked about Trump increasing Immigrant and Customs enforcement and said this, “ Trump has always been known to do stuff that America doesn’t like and this just is just proving that he’s not a good fit for America. He’s also trying to get rid of most of California since it’s a place a lot of immigrants come too”. This comment from this student shows the opinion Trump’s decision to advance Immigrant and Customs Enforcement has had not only on Immigrants but it hurts the community and the nation of America in a very harmful way.
There were also many protesters with signs that said “This country was made by immigrants,” and “The People United Will Defend Immigrant Families,” and “The People will Defeat Trump’s Extreme-Right Agenda.’ All of these obviously go against all of Trump’s enforcement on Immigrants and Customs even as it was said by protesters, “ The people united will defend immigrant Families. People protesting are showing resilience to show their support for the Latin community even giving them credit for building America as the nation it is today .
Even with all these protests all over the country Trump continues to ignore them and even advances Immigrant and Customs by bringing in the FBI and DEA to help deal with undocumented immigrants. This shows that Trump isn’t going to stop anytime soon, showing that he doesn’t care what the people say. Will people continue to protest to go against Trump’s policies of advancing Immigration and Customs or will Trump continue to ignore the people and start to get rid of more undocumented immigrants.
