The 2024 MLB champions, the Los Angeles Dodgers were busy once again this offseason.
Last year, they created a superteam with the historic signing of Shohei Ohtani and later Yoshinobu Yamamoto. They later added Tyler Glasnow and Teoscar Hernandez, both being all-stars. All new additions had very great first seasons with the boys in blue, Shohei winning MVP and being the first to achieve a 50/50 season, Glasnow pitched well in the regular season but injuries ended his season short. Hernandez took home the Home Run Derby. Yamamoto’s season was nothing short of drama. Starting off with bad numbers he quickly adjusted to the big leagues. He showed very good signs in the postseason playing well under extreme pressure.
So what was next for the Dodgers? Would they stick to this already super team and go quiet in the offseason? Or would they beef up the roster even more and create a team for the ages? Well, with three months left of the offseason, they’ve already shocked the league.
With their trade deadline acquisition of utility player Tommy Edman becoming quite successful, the 2024 NLCS MVP was brought back on a five year $74 million dollar deal. This keeps the fatal utility part that Tommy played during the playoffs where he also raked a .328 average with two home runs. Edman will be available to play at any position
Another returning fan favorite is Teoscar Hernandez coming back on a three year $66 million dollar deal. Teoscar was a juggernaut for the Dodgers in 2024, being not only a clutch hitter, but becoming the first Dodger player to win the Home Run Derby. Teo became a fan favorite for fun energy, his power and strength at the plate and his hustle on defense. He is a great team leader that compliments this lineup of stars
The Dodgers also extended Blake Treinen to a two year $22 million dollar deal. Blake was one of the most reliable relievers/closers for the Dodgers. Being an insanely clutch pitcher in tight situations, it’s no surprise GM Dave Roberts wanted his flamethrower back. The front office also added veteran Michael Conforto on a 1 year $17 million dollar deal as an outfield option
Los Angeles did not only extend, however, they went out and signed yet another ace in Blake Snell, The former Cy Young winner was brought in on a five year $182 million dollar contract. An absolute bombshell to the league. Snell will only make this team even stronger as he reunites with former teammate Tyler Glasnow in the stacked rotation built for anything.
In the midst of yet another explosive offseason, the Japanese superstar, Roki Sasaki was just posted up for MLB eligibility but it wasn’t gonna be easy to get him. After meeting with most of the league it was down to three teams, Padres, Blue Jays, and yes the Dodgers. And in spite of all odds, Los Angeles won the sweepstakes once again. Details about his contract are vague, but he will be with the organization for 6 years. However they were not done with international signings. They also acquired South Korean infielder Hye-Seong Kim from the KBO.
Now what does this mean for the rest of the league? Well it’s a wake up call for teams to start really spending big money. There are still some big free agents on the market that might have to settle for short term contracts. Now for the Dodgers, they have successfully built a team for the ages. With multiple MVPS, multiple Cy Youngs, and almost their entire roster being former All Stars. If they were able to win a World Series with a beaten up rotation, what could they do with a roster at full health. Teams like this are the ones that shape dynasties. Like the Showtime Lakers, the Murderers Row Yankees, and the 2010s Warriors.
The Dodgers have built a super team, maybe the greatest roster of all time is in Los Angeles. A city meant for stars should have plenty of them on their teams. Another exciting offseason has led to them lighting the league on fire. 2025 is looking promising for the Dodgers.
