I went to Mexico at the beginning of 2024 to the capital, Mexico City. Our flight took about two hours from LAX to Mexico City. We arrived in Mexico City around 8 o’clock and made our way to our Airbnb which was 30 minutes from the Airport. The apartment was located at Paseo de la Reforma avenue which consisted of two rooms, with two bathrooms, a pretty small kitchen area and a very big living room. We also had a balcony with a nice view of the city. We rested for a little while after our flight. Later that day we went to the Frida Kahlo Museum, also known as “La Casa Azul” (The Blue House), which is located in the Coyoacán neighborhood of Mexico City. This museum was once the home of the Mexican artist Frida Kahlo, in which she was born, lived, and passed away in. The house consisted of a few smaller buildings which had many paintings and artifacts. The museum also offers a showcase of many dresses that she hand-made. Outside the museum is full of plant life and little pyramids that have many little sculptures that Frida made herself. There was also a very small gift shop which we bought several things from.
After that we walked around the neighborhood of Coyoacán and we found this very big church in this park called the Parroquia San Juan Bautista. After the church we just walked around the park and looked at a few Mexican markets. Me and my mom tried chapulines which are grasshoppers with lots of seasoning. After that we ate some tacos filled with cow tongue and pork. Later we took an Uber back to the Airbnb and just relaxed there for the rest of the day. For dinner we went to the Balcon del Zocalo which is a restaurant on the top floor giving us a very good view of Mexico City and a very nice cathedral right next to us. I had a steak smothered in some type of salsa. With some sides that I shared with my mom After Our dinner we just went back to the Airbnb and just watched some scary movies.
The second day of our trip in Mexico City, since we are Catholics we went to the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe, located in Mexico City, which is one of the most important cathedrals sites in the world for Catholics. This basilica is based on the mother of Jesus Christ the Lady of Guadalupe. The cathedral was very big, consisting of many buildings including the church. Since we had the whole day free we just walked around looking at tall buildings which consisted of many sculptures and many famous statues. Millions of people visit this site everyday. For many Mexicans and Latin Americans, the Virgin of Guadalupe is not only a religious figure but also a symbol of hope, unity, and resistance. The basilica is not only a religious monument but a cultural and historical landmark, standing as a testament to the deep spiritual connection between the people of Mexico and their patron saint.
Once again after that we walked around the markets and shops and bought a few things. Afterwards, we went to this seafood restaurant where we had this big bowl of deep fried shrimp and guacamole with rice and beans on the side. We went back to the Airbnb to relax for a little bit then my mom got these Lucha Libre tickets. Lucha Libre is basically just WWE. We stayed for a couple hours and walked around the stadium. Once we finished that we just went to go eat some food. We ate from some tacos restaurant a couple blocks from our Airbnb so we wouldn’t have to ride another Uber.
On the third day we spent it at this theater show which was based on a love story which lasted like 2-3 hours which was very cool. After that we ate some food and walked around the nice theater. But the fourth day we spent it at Bosque de Chapultepec. It is basically this little community that is sinking and we just took a little boat ride that was included with a tour of the community. It was pretty cool because we would have to take the boat kinda everywhere. After that we just ate at an American/Mexican restaurant then went back to Airbnb to get our stuff then went to the airport.
Three hours later we were back in Los Angeles. I enjoyed the trip very much and all the fun stuff we did and especially the things we ate. But overall the trip was very fun and I would recommend to anyone interested to go to Mexico City with family and friends. It was a very cool learning experience for me and I believe that Mexico City helped me realize a lot about my culture and it could even help you learn about a different culture and your own.
