The Saugus High School dress code explains specific details on what is allowed and what is not allowed. In my opinion I think the dress code is a great way to keep people looking presentable, but I think there are some things that could change. Nowadays people wear whatever they want and the dress code does not prevent them from wearing almost anything they want. Parents and some teachers have complained about the things people are wearing such as it being distracting or taking away from the attention the teacher needs in class. Although some people think the dress code should be more strict, some people think the dress code is just fine the way it is currently.
The dress code states that “Hats and other headwear must allow the face to be visible to staff, and not interfere with the line of sight of any student or staff. Hoodies must allow the face and ears to be visible to school staff.” I believe that this rule could be a good rule, but they could change it slightly. For example they say that hoodies must have the students ears visible to the staff, but some students may dislike their ears or are not comfortable making them visible during the day. I believe students should be able to wear a hoodie that covers their ears because there are many reasons why they would want to cover their ears such as insecurity or if they are cold. Overall there are slight changes that could be made to the dress code to accompany students who want a little bit more.
The school policy explains that “The responsibility for the dress and grooming of a student rests with the student and their parents or guardians. Parents or guardians are responsible for ensuring student compliance with the school dress code.” One can see that parents are not doing an amazing job of making sure students follow the correct dress code as they show up in tiny shorts, strapless tops, etc. Parents and students could both make sure before they leave the house that they are following all of the requirements of the school dress code. As Mia Rizzo says, “I think that the dress code is not super strict, easy to follow and could be much worse than wearing a uniform.” By her saying this it explains that it is not a hard dress code to follow so doing the small things can help a lot.
Students want to wear what they like and what is comfortable, but they also need to remember that the people around them might not feel comfortable around other people in that. They also need to remember to follow the dress code policy by making sure their clothing has no alcohol, drugs, hate speech and other profanity. Mia Rizzo explains how she feels that “people don’t follow the dress code as much as they should, and students could do better.”
In summary, following the dress code is not extremely hard knowing that the school is very lenient with the dress code because they want everyone to feel confident and comfortable in their clothes. With the dress code it allows people to not be distracting others and not making others uncomfortable around them, but they can still express their style and wear what they love.
