In 2024, many new movies have been released and made their debut in theaters. Some films have sparked the eyes and hearts of many, while others have tended to be disliked or controversial. One highly anticipated sequel film is the movie Twisters. The premise of this scientific fiction is about a group of 4 adults on the hunt to catch and investigate a tornado outbreak in Oklahoma. The four main characters include the popular Glen Powell, Kiernan Shipka, Daisy Edger-Jones, and Anthony Ramos. The movie was directed by Lee Isaac Chung and is produced by Oscar nominee Frank Marshall. The movie premiered on July 8th, 2024, and came out July 19th, 2024. Besides watching in theaters, it can be watched on Apple TV, Fandango, YouTube, Google Play, and Prime Video.
This movie is a sequel to the 1966 release of Twisters. The first movie included actors like Bill Paxon, Jami Gertz, and Helen Hunt. Though slightly similar, this movie has a lot of contrasts from the new release. They both have the same concept however, 1966 Twister is about Helen and Bill deploying a device they named Dorothy into a tornado. They made efforts to hunt this tornado down and deploy the device inside because they wanted to better understand the tornado’s behaviors and save lives by preparing communities for extreme weather. However in both movies the characters are extremely adventurous and risk-taking, and the film continues to be full of surprises and plot twists. There are lots of definite connections between the two films but are different in their own ways making them great movies each separately.
The visual and sound effects in this movie were very realistic and truly captured the story. The tornados were made by using a complex fluid dynamic system however, they used real reference footage from real tornados. Universal, Warner Bros. Pictures, and Amblin Entertainment collaborated together to make this film come to life. The newer movie was a lot more scientifically accurate than the first Twister movie. Just for this, movie weather researchers studied tornadoes to understand what had to be done to make these tornadoes as realistic as possible. For the set they had to use 2 jet engines and 10,000 gallons of dump tanks of water cannons to create the storm for the actors. People offset were also throwing debris into the jet engines to make the tornado even more realistic for the movie. Even though the actual ability to capture a tornado and read its behavior isn’t something scientists have yet been able to do, the idea is still very interesting and hopefully able to be done at some point in history.
The ratings on this were pretty conflicting, the average was about 3.8 stars, however, there were many happy 5-star reviews. The majority of reviews stated that this movie was great and all agreed that it was an action-packed movie. When going around and asking Saugus Students their thoughts, Ella Will, a Freshman said “It was an intriguing movie and kept me guessing!” Another Saugus Student, Boston said “if a new Twisters movie came out I would watch it”. This is a really interesting thing to think about because it’s unclear how they would recreate this movie but also make it interesting and better at the same time. Would they keep the name and concept of the first movies and bring that into a new version? Overall, Twisters is an interesting movie, that was well thought out and brought to life.
