During an election with many firsts, voters made history on Election Day by voting in the first ever all-woman Board of Supervisors of Los Angeles County in the 2020 Election.

The Board of Supervisors is the governing body of the L.A. County made up of five seats, all of which are now held by women. The board serves as the executive and legislative head of the L.A. County, serving more than 10 million people who make up the county population.

This year’s board consists of Supervisor Hilda Solis, Sheila Kuehl, Janice Hahn, Kathryn Barger and newcomer Holly Mitchell. Supervisor-elect and former California state senator Mitchell won against L.A. City Councilman Herb Wesson for the seat of Supervisor Mark Ridley Thomas, who decided not to run again for this election.

“I’m honored to have earned the opportunity to represent the residents of the Second Supervisorial District,” tweeted Mitchell. “This was a community-driven campaign based on creating a more equitable, inclusive, and prosperous L.A. County.”

Mitchell has served as a state senator of California’s 30th Senate District for nine years. Before that she represented the 54th assembly district.

Members of the board are elected by voters in their districts and can serve up to three four-year terms. As chair of the Senate Budget and Fiscal Review committee, Holly has overseen the passage and adoption of the last two state budgets, each nearly $200 Billion.

Mitchell garnered about 60 percent of the vote in supervisor district two, which encompasses Carson, Compton, Culver City, Koreatown and Inglewood.

Wesson fell behind in the ballot count with 40 percent, with about 100,000 votes in between the candidates.
