Kwak is both a teacher and coach at Saugus High School. He coaches football and girls flag football. Kwak has been coaching at Saugus for 5 years, and has been inspired by coaches of his own. Coach Kwak seems to always put a smile on students’ faces on campus and on the field. Furthermore, he describes his coaching style as driven and personable. Ultimately, this proves that Kwak can push you as a player, while also still having a relaxed and positive demeanor. Kwak is known to push his players to their highest potential, to provide the best high school experience for them. He further talks about how he grew up playing baseball, football, and track and field at Saugus and how playing these sports proves that he certainly has a passion for coaching.
I interviewed Kwak and asked him the following questions:
- What inspired you to become a coach? “Coach Bornn and Coach Russell here at Saugus inspired me to get into coaching. I admired their impact within the Saugus community and how they are able to still have time to focus on family.”
- What is your favorite part about coaching? “My favorite part of coaching is helping players achieve their full potential. It is fun seeing freshmen become seniors.”
- What sports have you played in the past/ growing up? “At Saugus, I played baseball, football, and ran track & field.”
- How would you describe your coaching style? “Enthusiastic, driven, focused, but also relaxed and personable.”
- What do you think is the most important quality a coach should have? “Trust in their players and with fellow coaches.”
- Can you describe your educational background? “I attended Saugus High School and then Linfield University, where I earned a Bachelor’s Degree in History. I then attended Grand Canyon University and earned my Masters Degree in Education.”
- What do most people not know about you? “I just got married last July! I live with my wife Sarah, who is a nurse at UCLA, my golden retriever, Chili Pepper, and my two cats, Olive and Snickerdoodle.”
- How long have you been coaching at Saugus? “This is my 5th year coaching at Saugus.”
Coach Kwak is not only a great coach, but a great teacher. He puts pride in his coaching, while creating an inspiring influence in the classroom. He motivates his students to reach their full potential and encourages them to give their best effort in everything they do. Furthermore, Kwak is easy to approach on and off the field. I would encourage every student to look up to coach Kwak, as he is a positive role model to look up to.
