On September 8th, 1975, a brand new school was added to the district. What was once a cattle farm in the Santa Clarita Valley, has now become a campus filled with so many students. For 50 years, Saugus has been going strong, by offering different clubs, sports, and activities for students to be involved in.
To celebrate Saugus turning 50 years old, assistant principal Diane Hamburger hosted an event with former teachers, and students from the first graduating class to come and celebrate the special milestone. Mrs. Hamburger explains how she felt, “It feels great. It was wonderful, I went down memory lane looking at the old photos and just planning it and looking out over all the accomplishments that students have done the last 50 years. It felt great seeing my children go through here and having great teachers that they had and being involved in sports and ASB. It’s just great being a parent here myself and working here, just knowing all our excellent staff that we have and they really prepared them for what they’re doing now. I think the school has held up very well. We were tested on November 14, 2019, but we came together, we’ve been there to support each other, and we have a great staff and our students, and then also the pandemic, everyone has just come together to support everyone and to move forward and help them in their futures.” From only having 800 students to now having over 2,000 is impressive for a high school. Going down memory lane, and seeing former students making it big outside of Saugus can be emotional, but it is also rewarding seeing them use skills they learned from incredible teachers and seeing them come back home.
Some of the teachers at school were once students. Kaitlyn Salazar, one of the history teachers, talks about her time here. “I graduated in 2006. My mom graduated from Saugus and was part of the first graduating class. I feel pretty special knowing that I’m part of the legacy. My mom came here, I came here, and my daughter is going to be a future Centurion. I was part of the cheerleading team 3 out of my 4 years.” Knowing that your children came here and future generations to come is truly amazing. Even after graduating, it’s still important to come back and reminisce walking through the halls and classrooms you once roamed.
To sum it all up, Saugus is truly an amazing place to go. The staff don’t teach you subjects, they also teach life skills that will come in handy later on in life and help with your education so you can have a steady career.
