Saugus is made up of an incredible group of students that are unbelievably talented and show their commitment and efficiency through balancing academics, athletics, and their personal lives throughout the school year. One particular student that has displayed their skill over the years is Amelia Johnson, a senior, who plays the catcher position for the Saugus Varsity Softball team.
Amelia has exhibited her dedication and love for softball from a young age. We spoke to Amelia who said, “I discovered my love for softball when I was 6 years old. My grandpa and dad influenced my interest in playing since, similar to softball, baseball was such a huge part of their lives.” Since she was a child, Amelia has been uplifted and motivated to do what she loves! In addition to that, Amelia told us that her biggest inspiration throughout her softball career has been her grandfather. She mentioned that, “Since he played major league baseball, he has had a life of experience on the field so I always call him after games and we talk through anything, no matter if I struggled or succeeded.” It’s safe to say that Ameila has a huge sense of support that has helped her throughout her years of playing softball. Knowing that she always has someone to cheer her on has encouraged her and fueled her passion for the game!
Amelia’s hard work has truly paid off as she has received the honor of Player of the Year from both the Saugus Softball team and the ICE Recovery and Wellness Center! Another extraordinary accomplishment that Amelia has made is committing to play D1 softball at the University of Nebraska in Omaha! Ameila told us, “The decision was easy, but I had to get used to the idea of moving away from my friends and family so that made it a bit harder.” She ultimately knew that it was the right decision for her, but of course a lot of thought went into it. Even though distance can be hard, we have no doubt that Amelia will continue to be just as successful and amazing while playing for the Omaha Mavericks!
Juggling work as a senior along with sports can be tiring at times. Amelia keeps her schedule and mental health steady by making time for other interests and hobbies. After practices, workouts, and studying, Ameila noted, “I love to read, so I’ll read after homework and before bed because it’s a good way for me to relax and wind down.” It’s very important to take breaks, especially when there’s a lot going on. Amelia presented an amazing way to unwind after long and stressful days. Ameila told us that overall, she’s had a good high school experience along with a great 3 softball seasons! She expressed that playing with the friends that she’s grown up with has been memorable and nonetheless a wonderful journey. Amelia commented, “My favorite year so far has been my junior year because my team won the tournament at Central and we were the Foothill League champions!” Ameila as well as her teammates have played many exceptional games, proving that our Saugus athletes are nothing short of amazing!
Amelia Johnson has shone brightly throughout her time here at Saugus Highschool and we can’t wait to see all of the accomplishments she is going to make in the future. Her sense of leadership and grit has given her honorable opportunities and has gotten her to where she is today!
