Jake Nuttal is a Senior at Saugus High School, who is on the varsity football team playing as quarterback. He does not only lead on the field, but also sets an example for those off the field, in the classroom and among peers. Jake embodies what a student athlete should be by balancing his studies and sports, while also being a kind leader that makes him stand out from other student athletes. Jake is determined to better himself everyday, he doesn’t just focus on his performance on the field but also focuses on his school work and how to better himself.
When asked about how he balances school, life, and sports at the same time he gave a phenomenal answer, stating “I balance it by making sure I enjoy the present moment weather that be school, on the field, hanging out with friends, I always try to enjoy the present moment and not think about anything else.” This shows that Jake has a positive outlook on life, a positive mindset, and values living life to the fullest in each part of his life. He is very humble, and down to earth is how others describe him on and off the field. We all know we have someone who inspires us, so I decided to ask Jake who is his biggest influence in football, he talks about his Offensive Coordinator Scotty Hamiton. He stated “he’s a super laid back lead by example type of guy and he’s been my biggest role model.” This expresses that he values mentorship and respects the people around him.
On the field, Jake’s leadership is clear. As quarterback, he is responsible for making plays and inspiring his teammates to perform at their best. Jake even stated this in his interview, saying
how being a leader and the quarterback he must make sure everyone is locked in. He knows leadership is not just calling plays, and throwing the ball; it’s about uniting his team and keeping them focused. One of the biggest lessons Jake has learned has come from Coach Bornn, who told him “to strive to be a better all-around man everyday, not just a better football player.” This lesson speaks about Jake’s character and shows that he values becoming a great person as much as becoming a great athlete.
Football comes with all types of problems as we know it, and Jake does not shy from that at all. He admits that “conflicts and challenges arise everyday since it’s a super physical sport, so there are always fights in practice, but we understand once the whistle blows we’re back to being brothers.” His outlook on the game and even those types of problems shows his maturity and respect for the brotherhood of the game. Jake also understands grit and perseverance, explaining how “one game doesn’t define a whole season” and that’s what matters is getting back to work and continuing to improve.
In many ways, Jake Nuttal represents the ideal student athlete. His balance of academics and athletics, his leadership on the field, his respect for mentors and his peers, and his positive character makes him stand out. While many players throw a football or run a play, Jake ups the standard of how a great athlete is more than just talent. It’s about discipline, integrity, and the drive to thrive in all parts of life. His grit, perseverance and ability to overcome challenges proves that he is not only physically strong but also mentally tough.
