As Saugus Football steps into the 2025 football season with head coach Jason Bornn, who is entering his 23rd year as head coach and 36th year in the program. Coach Bornn has worked hard to create a good reputation for the school with four Foothill League titles (in years 2008, 2011, 2020, 2021) and has coached 14 playoff games since 2004. This is also including four CIF playoff Semi Final appearances. He has continued to improve his leadership, whilst teaching it to his players.
In recent years, Saugus Football has had their fair share of struggles with a 2- 8 record in 2024 and then a 0-10 record in 2023. The whole program is optimistic and truly committed to trusting Coach Bornn and his knowledge of the game. Bornn’s belief in discipline and having a persevering mindset with integrous belief in his players is what keeps them locked in.
To reflect on the recent season from the Centurions, the team has been around for all the highs and the lows. In 2022 Saugus posted an impressive 8-3 record which helped them earn a playoff appearance. But when the team hit a hard downturn in 2023, the Cents went 0-10. Although the hardships appeared, the program continued to keep belief in themselves and made sure to persevere from a struggling season.
With a new and fresh season on the way there is a lot to watch from the Cents. They are looking to improve their leadership development, with tests of how captain-level players step up under the coaching and guidance of Head Coach Bornn. As well as how will they handle the game by game momentum with the earlier matchups in the season that will be difficult but can help build their confidence toward big time Matchups against Hart, West ranch and Valencia. The team culture will also have to be tested with a sure rebuild in the last couple of seasons will 2025 finally be the season for serious playoff contention?
When talking to and asking Saugus Varsity Football Captain and starting Quarterback, Jake Nuttall questions about the team this year he seemed extremely optimistic!
1. What are your, and the team’s expectations and goals? Jake answered by saying “ My goal is simply to get the team to win games having started off 2-0, my goal and the team’s goal is clear and that is to make a CIF playoff run. The expectations couldn’t be any higher for this team as we feel the rebuild is finally over.
2. How is the team’s spirit entering this season? Spirits are very high having won our first game at home and having just gone on the road winning 51-19 were trying to continue to ride this positive wave week by week.
3. As a senior how have coaches and teammates built you to the player you are today? Our core group is senior heavy so I’ve been playing with most of these guys for 4 years. I’ve loved all the memories created with them and we push each other every day on the field. Coach Bornn has continued to shape me into a better person daily and helps push me to be a better man. I’m really grateful I got to spend 4 years playing for him and wouldn’t want to play for anybody else.
To conclude, Saugus Football is ready to take Foothill League by storm. With the rebuild said to be done they are in high hopes and locked in on being Foothill League Champions.
