One of the most beloved coffee shops, only located in the Santa Clarita Valley, has been broken into for the second time in April, 2025. People go to Makenna Koffee for the Hawaiian aesthetic that is included with the names of their drinks and decorations within the shop. Since opening January 6th 2024, they have been busy with a diverse group of Santa Clarita residents – this made their company willing to even begin expanding their locations throughout California by this summer! Unfortunately, the burglars have made the team of Makenna Koffee feel so defeated and scared for their job.
At Saugus High School, many current students and alumnus depend on this coffee shop for employment. Senior, Kylie Stangl has been working at Makenna for a few months now and she has accumulated many opinions on the danger of these break-ins. There have been two break-ins, Stangl confirms, “The first one happened January 8th and the most recent one happened on April 10th.” Though they were far apart, this creates higher stress levels for the workers and owners of the coffee shop, especially because the main working crowd is female teens and young adults. Another cautionary factor about these unnamed burglars is that their consistency is unpredictable, so the Makenna Koffee team just has to accept when they steal from them. Wondering exactly what the two men stole, Kylie informs me that,” the burglars stole our register.” Obviously, the criminals would take something as valuable as money in an eatery location because the food or drink supplies would not be something to steal from a company.
Every businesses greatest fear is always either getting no customers, or being stolen from. Makenna Koffee definitely does not worry about their daily customer intake because every day fills up their shop with long lines of drink lovers. On the other hand, they are making a lot of daily profits, making their shop look appealing to the burglars. When interviewing Kylie, I asked her how these break-ins are making her emotionally feel, “it makes me feel upset that they would target places that are supposed to be safe.” Kylie and her co-workers show up to work to provide money for themselves, make long lasting bonds with friends, and get great social working skills with all of the customers. Unfortunately now, the young workers have to worry about being prepared for the worst since their shop has been put in danger twice.
Although Makenna Koffee is the main company being targeted by the city, Stangl comments, “they’re targeting other places for sure like Baskin Robbins or another coffee shop in Newhall called Henry’s coffee or papa john’s. I think they’re targeting places they believe are vulnerable or would have money to take. some shops like Philz don’t take cash, so there really wouldn’t be any cash to steal.” Being aware of the dangers of one’s community is always so important, be sure to constantly check news networks, the “What’s Up SCV” instagram account, and “the Signal SCV” newspaper for any of the current burglaries in the city.
All in all, everyone loves going to Makenna Koffee on a sunny or cloudy day – the colorful and tasty drinks act as a “pick-me-up” treat for many Santa Clarita residents. Even though the shop has gone through a lot this year, the company can always depend on their community to continue showing up everyday.
