Martin Luther King Jr. Day is celebrated every year on the third Monday of January to honor the honorable life and consistent work of Dr. King, he is known as one of the most important activists/persons in American history. He was one of the biggest activists for colored peoples rights, social justice, and to end all of the very disrespectful treatment to the colored people. He was determined to end racism through peace and nonviolent protests. MLK day is a day to recognize how he is still working not only in America but the whole world. His work is a way in which we can be determined and inspired to be better and continue to advance our world.
Dr. Martin Luther King was born on January 15, 1929, in Atlanta, Georgia. He grew up in a very religious family which was a big influence on his peaceful protests and teachings. Dr King was one of the biggest leaders in the civil rights movement in the mid 1900s, he helped organize humongous protests and campaigns to help fight the segregation laws and help improve all rights for his fellow colored people. One of Martin’s most famous movements he led was the March on Washington, this is where MLK was able to present his world renowned I have a Dream speech in front of millions. During this speech he was able to share his lifelong dream of a world in which people wouldnt be judged through skin but by their character.
Dr. King was a big believer in Nonviolent protest/movements to help fight for the rights and change of treatment to color people. Dr. King was an advocate for peace and love through protest which could help change society. He faced many setbacks and violent opposers but he remained calm and was not going to leave his peaceful ways. He and his followers were able to influence changes to important laws like the civil rights act of 1964 and the Voting rights act of 1965, which worked to end segregation and protect the voting rights of all African Americans. The fascinating fact though was that Dr. King was very much aware that laws alone would not be enough to create true equality. He understood that society’s attitudes and systems needed to change as well.
Martin Luther King Jr. Day, which became a holiday in 1983, is a time to remember Dr. King’s life and work. It’s also a time for us to remember, learn and think about the hardships colored people faced then and that still exist today. On his day there are many people who participate in big events such as marches, giving back to the community and much more. This day is used by the people to give back through services, it honors Dr Kings. Honorary work.
When talking to fellow Saugus Student Imran Kasule I wanted to dig deep into his thoughts about MLK I asked him, what are his thoughts on Dr King, does he think the world would be much different without him, and does he agree with peaceful protests and calmness through all racism, Imran stated how “MlK is someone that we can all look up to regardless of race, gender and religion. His nonviolent approach to adversity is something we can all learn from him and apply to our own life through struggles” Imran made great points on why MLK is still such an influence in our society today! He continued by saying “ To say the world would be different without MLK would be a disservice to all the other civil rights activists that had the same goal. MLK had a significant impact on the colored peoples rights movements but so did all his colleagues which is why I think if it wasn’t MLK someone else would’ve done what he did”. Lastly Imran states that “ I 100% agree with Dr King’s Ideology of peaceful protesting towards racism and admire his patience and resilience throughout the struggle”. Imran provided amazing points and backed it all up where he supports Dr King’s motives and how he is inspired by it!
To sum it up, Dr King’s Influence that is still growing, his strategies and his everlasting mark on this world will never be forgotten. He is always going to be a figure in the world.
