Growing up with curly hair is a journey; equal parts frustration and discovery. I’ve had my battles with frizz, heat tools, and products that promised miracles yet delivered nothing. But over time, I’ve learned to appreciate the beauty and uniqueness of my curls. They are a part of me, who I am. Taking care of them has become second nature. Whether you are just starting to embrace your natural texture or are looking to perfect your routine, this guide is here to help you love and style your curls.
Products:
MONDAY Shampoo and Conditioner ($26.99)
MONDAY is “an award-winning, modern haircare brand making luxury more inclusive”. It is made for wavy to curly hair. It leaves my hair feeling clean as well as hydrated, perfect for before my styling.
OAUI Leave-in Conditioner ($30.00)
The OUAI leave-in conditioner will forever be one of my favorites. It is very hydrating and helps reduce frizz. It can also used as a heat protectant and when used with heat, it reduces hair breakage by 52%. Another factor that drew me into this product was its smell. The signature OUAI’s North Bondi fragrance is a citrusy floral scent.
Rizos Curl Defining Cream ($21.99)
The Rizos Curl Defining Cream defines curls, doesn’t weigh the hair down, and is non-greasy. It’s become a staple in my curly hair routine because I love definition and shine over volume but diffusing can make such a big difference depending on what you’re looking for.
Kinky Curly Curling Custard ($20.00)
The Kinky Curly Curling Custard is a natural styling gel that defines curls and holds them in place. This gel is perfect for any gel cast and for a long-lasting look. It can be kept in its gel cast or scrunched out with hair oil.
Steps for styling curly hair:
Step 1: Start by thoroughly wetting your hair. Curly hair tends to style best when it’s completely soaked, so make sure every section is drenched. Split your hair into two sections, left and right, then bring each section forward so it is easier to style.
Step 2: Apply a generous amount of leave-in conditioner, like the OUAI Leave-In Conditioner, to one section at a time.
Step 3: Once the leave-in conditioner is evenly distributed, apply your curl cream like the Rizos Curl Defining Cream. Start with a small amount and rake it through your hair with your fingers, ensuring every strand is coated. Then, scrunch your hair upwards toward the roots.
Step 4: Next, use a gel such as the Kinky Curly Curling Custard, to lock in the moisture and set your curls. Apply a small amount, smoothing it over the surface of your hair and scrunching it in gently to avoid breaking the curl pattern.
Step 5: (optional) After applying your products, use a microfiber towel or a cotton T-shirt to remove excess water and product by gently scrunching your hair. This helps reduce frizz without disrupting the curl pattern.
Step 6: Allow your hair to air dry or use a diffuser attachment on a blow dryer to speed up the process. If there is a gel cast, you can take a lightweight oil and gently scrunch it out making sure not to create frizz.
In an interview with Saugus student, Olivia Allen, she explains her journey with curly hair. “In kindergarten, I wanted straight hair because most people in my class had it. As I got older, my mom would help me style it which slowly helped me embrace it over time. Throughout the week, I switch between my hair down and in slick backs because it’s easier in the morning and I really only straighten my hair like twice a year”. Once she found the right products and techniques, it was easy to love and embrace her curls.
Caring for curly hair is all about finding what works best for you. With the right techniques, products, and a bit of patience you can learn to enhance your natural curls while keeping them healthy. Every curl and pattern is unique so love your hair the way it is.
