As a new year is starting a new group of incoming freshmen have many questions about going into their high school years. It can be nerve-racking, scary, and exciting all at once. When a huge change is just awaiting you, waves of emotions can be overwhelming. Today I’m going to be interviewing Sophomore Chloe Santa Cruz and she’s going to be answering many unanswered questions most freshmen have.
~What’s it like here at Saugus, exciting, boring, fun, thrilling?
- “It’s very fun, I like hanging out with my friends. I enjoy it”.
~What’s your academic life like? Like overwhelming, underwhelming, scary, simple?
- “It’s very overwhelming. The workload is a lot, definitely way more than freshman year. I’m slowly starting to get used to it, but I definitely need to get more organized”.
~Are you a part of any sports and clubs? If so, what are they like?
- “Yes I just got on the golf team and I want to go back to track. Last year I loved track, the girls were very amazing, but golf this year is very fun.
~Do you think being a sophomore is easier, the same, or harder than freshman year? Why?
- “I think the experience of the social group is different. The workload is definitely different but overall it feels pretty much the same.”
~Do you plan on attending any after-school events such as football games, homecoming, prom, and food drives?
- “Yes, I do plan on going to football games and homecoming, everything like that. It’s good to have fun after school hours.”
~What are your favorite classes here now as a freshman? Are they the same, or different from freshman year? Why?
- “So far I think my favorite class this year is chemistry and English. And last year it was Spanish or math.
~What was a key factor that helped you get through freshman year when times were challenging?
- “Probably going to my parents and asking for help or just asking for help when it was needed.”
~If there was anything you’d change in your freshman year, what would it be and why?
- “I don’t think I’d really change anything. I really liked my classes and I really like how many friends I made. Everything was really set up well and I enjoyed how it ended up in the end.”
~What are the main challenges of being a freshman vs being a sophomore?
- The challenges of being a freshman are probably like getting used to the school and the campus. Trying not to get lost and get comfortable with everything. Now being a Sophomore now is more homework and workload.”
~ What’s something you’d tell freshmen to help their stress of coming into Saugus?
- “Definitely ask for help, stay organized, use your planner even if it’s annoying. I never personally did this but went to the help days. I know they help a lot in needing to have questions answered. Like staying after school, and scheduling with your teacher. It will help, I promise.”
~What was it like going into freshman year? Scary, exciting, nervous? How did you get through it?
- It was a little scary at the beginning. But I had friends there with me going through the same thing. I made some new friends and lost some but I think high school is about exploring and finding yourself and that’s one thing that made it difficult. You start with what you think you know and then you branch out and find yourself. But I got through it by being social and being more outgoing because I got to meet new people.”
Now that he has many of the questions answered, hopefully, our incoming freshmen have a better understanding of what’s to come for them next year.
