Saugus high school includes a wide variety of student run clubs across campus, one of them being Key Club. Saugus’ Key Club is included in the Division 16 North unicorns, Region 7, the Cali-Nev-Ha District, and Key Club International. At the heart of this club there are many ways to become involved with the community by helping the fellow residents of Santa Clarita. As they build character and morality, students learn how to appreciate the significance of doing community service. At Saugus, this club highly recommends all students because it builds the honest disposition of youthful minds within society.
The current vice president of Key Club, senior, Erica Park, provides information about her perspective of this program. Park expresses how this club promotes community service in her everyday life, “Key Club helps you connect with like-minded peers who also have an interest in volunteerism or simply contributing to one’s community.” Continuing with her positive response, the bright teen adds, “As a student, you’ll earn hours and cords. But in life, through Key Club, you can network and communicate with people beyond the Saugus population by “getting out there”’. It is incredibly clear how important this club means to Park and so many of the other students who involve themselves with this nation wide association. The noble vice president speaks of the enlightenment students gain,“The club can serve as a gateway for students to consider the impact any action of kindness can have and allow them to leave a mark on their community (and maybe even beyond.)”
Aside from the positive effect this club has on every student who engages in volunteer hours, they provide service hours to compete with fellow Saugus peers. Sharing about detailed events that Key Club will be providing this semester, Park elaborates, “For fall, we’re going to reach out to nearby elementary schools who will host Fall Festivals and provide an opportunity for Key Club members to help out. Some more upcoming volunteer opportunities we operate are the jeepers creepers marathon, river rallies, cards for veterans, and much more.” Thanks to this Saugus student’s perspective, the community now has a deeper understanding of how the Key Club helps teenagers gain work ethic for their futures.
Another proud representative of the club, Saugus senior and President of the club, Sophia Lane, gives her unique input of what this association means to her high school experience. Taking on a huge responsibility to lead any group is a difficult position, but Lane committed to the challenge, “When the time came, I did not hesitate to step up as President. My experience, motivation, and dedication to helping others serve our community gave me the confidence to take on the challenge. Being the President of such a wonderful club with devoted members makes me immensely proud of my peers every day”. Conveniently, since this senior is preparing herself to begin the application process for college, Lane can take the skills she’s learned from Key Club and apply them to her future! Lane adds, “Learning to manage such a vast group of people has taught me the importance of patience and genuine devotion—something that I will forever be thankful I had the experience of developing,” the scholar expresses her learning lessons from the club, “Among others, I think that being a part of Key Club and the board has taught me so many different things about myself that will set me up for success on my future endeavors!”.
Lastly, there are about sixty-six clubs on campus, but what makes key club one of the most important clubs? President Lane answers this question for the curious students of Saugus, “Key Club stands out due to our outstanding devotion and focus on community service. Because of this mission, we offer students an amazing opportunity to fulfill Saugus’ mission to serve, honor, and succeed. As the largest student-led club on campus, we provide countless opportunities for students to take initiative and develop leadership skills while making a meaningful impact,”. Lane sets a strong leadership expectation by helping the student body of Saugus High School build the habit of being involved with the community.
All in all, Key Club is a program at Saugus that embraces the lessons students take away from being involved with their community. Teenagers get to participate in multiple volunteer hours each semester to utilize college applications and future morals. Working hard to build a stronger environment for citizens of all ages is exactly what this international club serves to the world.
