As the school year has winded down, so have our spring sports here at Saugus. Our spring sports include baseball, softball, boy’s lacrosse, girl’s lacrosse, boy’s volleyball, boy’s golf, track, swim, and dive. As some of our teams move on to playoffs, let’s recap how their seasons went! *Stats From MaxPreps*
Baseball
Varsity: Run by Coach Grissom. This team has had a pretty remarkable season. The team started the season rough after losing 7 games straight. But with resilience and determination, they were able to win 11 out of the 13 next games! They finished 3rd in the league with 9 wins and 3 losses. During the season the boys achieved some amazing things, beating Valencia in extra innings and sweeping Hart for the first time in 18 years! They are ranked 192nd in California. The batting average this season has been .333, while the on-base percentage has been .375. Some of their key players include Kaden Haag, James Frias, Parker Allman, Matthew Montiel, Jason Zepeda, and Wesley Yim. When interviewing Coach Grissim, you can truly tell how proud and how much he loves this team. “They never stopped believing what they were capable of doing. The best quality of this year’s team is their great chemistry. These guys have been competing together for four years at different levels in the program, and this is the final chapter of their story,” Grissom explained. When asked about his plans and ideas for next season after losing 18 senior players, the coach explained he wants to build on what they were doing this year and is ready for the challenge! We wish baseball the best of luck for next season!
Junior Varsity: This team has also had a successful season with 14 wins and 4 losses. They won all 7 league games as well.
Frosh: The freshmen team won 7 games and lost 6. They won 2 of their league games and lost 4.
Softball
Varsity: The head coach is Coach Clark. This team has had a solid season. They overall won 18 of their games, while losing 10. They placed second in the league after winning 9 out of 12 games. They are ranked 104 in California. Their batting average was .222, while their on-base average was .250. Their key players include Kaylie Stauffer, Kennedy Tompson, Riley Nelson, Amelia Johnson, and Malia Horvat. When asked about her team, Coach Clark explained how proud she is of her team’s “perseverance, dedication, and resilience throughout the season,” and continued to say “During times of adversity, the team continued to focus on team goals and put their best foot forward. They fought hard against tough opponents and ended with an overall winning season. Us coaches are very proud of this team and the growth that was made this season.” Coach Clark said her favorite time during the season was the senior night as the team got to play in the Hart Complex where they first started playing softball. To her seniors: “It was such an honor to coach these young ladies and to be a part of their growth in the sport of softball. Avery, Zoe, Jasmine, Kaylie, and Kennedy, we wish you nothing but success in your future adventures. Thank you for all that you have done for Saugus Softball; you will be missed!” We wish softball the best for next year!
Junior Varsity: JV has two teams one coached by Coach Bob and Coach Josh, and the other coached by Coach Bob and Coach Robert. Both teams were pretty successful in their seasons, winning more games than lost.
Boys Lacrosse
Varsity: Ran by Coach Ireland. This team has won 11 games and lost 9. They are second in the league this year, right behind Heart, after winning 7 out of their 8 games. The team is ranked 65 in California. Some of their MVPs include Parker Teel, Wyatt Noch, Matthew Hollenburg, and Aidan Caouette. We hope next season will be just as great as this one!
Junior Varsity: Coached by Coach Ireland. This team won all 6 of their league games! Overall, they won 8 out of 12 of their games.
Girls Lacrosse
Varsity: Coached by Head Coach Olsen. These girls won 12 games, lost 7, and tied 1. They placed 3rd in the league. The team is ranked 131 in California. Some of their MVPs include Gabrealle Martinez, Caroline Doran, Kacey Quinlan, Amelia Villanueva, and Kacey Quinlan. Coach Olsen’s favorite moment in the season was when they “finally made the playoffs for the first time in the history of this program. Not only going but winning a game. That was a huge moment.” He continues to explain, “This year was just a step to our success. We have a talented team and have been together for the past 3 years. A positive attitude goes a long way. We will work harder than last year because now we know we can succeed.” We wish lacrosse even more success next season!
Junior Varsity: Coached by Coach Saveya Diaz. This team placed 1st in the league after winning 2, losing 1, and tying 1. Overall, they won 8, lost 4, and tied 1.
Boys Volleyball
Varsity: Coached by Coach McGinley. The boys had one of their best seasons since 2007! They placed second in the league after winning 9 out of 12 over their games. Overall, the boys won 19, lost 11, and tied 2 of their games. They are ranked 123 in California. One of the qualities that stands out about this team is their passion and love for the game, “This team was one of the best teams to coach. This team showed resilience daily, battled every point, played together as one, and played with a lot of heart,” Coach McGinley said. When asked about her favorite qualities of her players, she replied that loved their “determination, hard work ethic, respect, resilience, passion, and grit.” We hope volleyball is just as successful next year!
Junior Varsity: Coached by Coach Cam. The team won 3 of 5 of their games and lost both league games.
Track and Field
They were coached by Coach Berns and Coach Stanley. The track had a phenomenal season. Dominic Lewis, Timothy Gulley, Alexia Campoverde, Lucas Francke, Anthony Lewis Garcia, Tyler Blackwell, Ryan Peavy, Adrian Cantu, Sebastian Peraza, Henry Saywell, Caleb Fredericks, and David Pineada, among a few others, set lots of school records for boys in all the categories. For girls, Halim Moore, Karina Page, Hazel Rhodes, Karina Page, Makenna Blum, Aria Green, Lucia Pearson, Annika Mark, Rachel Williams, Lauren Collins, Paityn Zenno, Mary Connelly, Sage Doelitzsch, Sophia Sol, Maddison Kasahara, Gabrielle Santiago, Keira Woods, Angela Rodriquez, and a few others set records for the school as well. In the league, many runners qualified for prelims, and many of them did great at finals moving them into CIF prelims. Lots of their runners qualified for CIF prelims, but for CIF finals, Hazel Rhodes qualified for her 400m event, and the 4×4 team, Hazel Rhodes, Aria Green, Makenna Blum, and Halima Williams. Congratulations on your amazing accomplishments this season, we hope the CIF finals go very well! We wish the team the best of luck next season!
Swim and Dive
Coached by Coach Clipfel. The girl’s and boys’ teams have both had very successful seasons and have done a great job at a lot of their meets. Whether it is improving and beating their personal bests or setting records, the team has been growing their skills tremendously. We wish them the best of luck as they move into the CIF State Championship. We hope they have a great season next year!
Boy’s Tennis
Varsity: Coached by Coach Sindle. No stats on MaxPreps. One of Coach Sindle’s favorite moments of the season was “Seeing Hunter Dustin and Tate Franti compete at League Prelims was pretty special. Those two are some of the best players you’ll meet both on and off the court. When they competed, it was a great culmination of their season together.” Coach Sindle explained that the best quality of this team was “The energy from this particular team (compared to years in the past) is infectious. They are so supportive of one another and have really impressed me with their ability to come together as a team. I’ve received compliments from numerous schools about the positive comradery and encouragement that the boys display and I think that is a major compliment to them.” We wish tennis the most success next season! together.
Boy’s Golf
Coached by Coach Minor and Coach Soto. No stats on MaxPreps. They had 6 Foothill league matches. Varsity had eleven players while Junior Varsity had nine. We hope golf had a good season and we wish them success next year!
Saugus is so lucky to have such amazing student-athletes and coaches. Congrats to all the teams on all of their success, hard work, determination, and dedication this season. It’s truly not easy managing classes with games and practices, so all of the players should be incredibly proud of themselves. Also congratulations to all of the seniors graduating, the teams are going to miss you, thank you for putting in so much during your time at Saugus! We wish the teams the most growth, success, and accomplishments next season.
