The Golden Globe Awards first started in January 1944 and has since grown to become one of the most popular award ceremonies for actors, actresses, and other people involved in the making of movies. The 2024 Golden Globes was the 81st annual and it is ranked the 3rd most-watched award show behind the Oscars and the Grammy’s. The show is streamed to 167 countries worldwide which shows just how popular the Golden Globes have become.
There were 27 awards given away at the Golden Globes this year. This means that there are around 100 nominations for a Golden Globe in total. Some of the most relevant categories include Cinematic and Box Office Achievement in which the movies Guardians of The Galaxy Vol. 3, John Wick: Chapter 4, Mission Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part 1, Oppenheimer, Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse, Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour, The Super Mario Bros. Movie, and Barbie. Another category that was popular to the public was Best Director – Motion Picture. The movies and directors nominated for this category were Maestro – by Bradley Cooper, Past Lives – by Celine Song, Barbie – by Greta Gerwig, Killers of The Flower Moon – by Martin Scorsese, Poor Things – by Yorgos Lanthimos, and Oppenheimer – by Christopher Nolan. There are many other popular and important categories that many groundbreaking movies have been nominated for, but these two were ultimately the most known and most popular.
Though many talented creators and actors were nominated, only one winner was possible for each category. There were 27 categories meaning 27 winners. Some of the most impressive and well-known categories and their winners are Billie Eilish’s “What Was I Made For?” for Best Original Song- Motion Picture, Emma Stone’s performance in “Poor Things” for Best Performance By A Female Actor in a Motion Picture- Musical or Comedy, Cillian Murphy for his role in “Oppenheimer” for Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama, “Succession” for the category Best Television Series – Drama, and lastly “Barbie” won Cinematic and Box Office Achievement.
With the Golden Globes being one of the most famous events for celebrities each year, there are bound to be extravagant and shocking outfit choices. Margot Robbie, who was there for her role as Barbie in “Barbie” wore a replica of the 1977 Superstar Barbies dress made by Giorgio Armani. This dress was pink with a plastic-like look and was topped with a pink feather boa. A few other looks worn on the red carpet this year were Jennifer Lopez, wearing a light pink Nicole + Felicia Couture dress, Taylor Swift wearing a green sparkly Gucci floor-length
dress, Billie Eilish wearing Willy Chavarria outfit consisting of a brown skirt with a tuxedo-like top, Selena Gomez in a red Giorgio Armani Prive, Timothee Chalamet in a sparkly Black Tux by Celine, Dua Lipa in a Black and gold dress by Schiaparelli, Emma Stone in a Louis Vuiton silver and gold sparkly dress, and Cilian Murphy wearing a basic black tux with a white undershirt. Saugus Sophomore Audrey Smith explains her favorite look was “Margot Robbie because I loved the Barbie movie and I think it’s cool that she wears outfits based off of real Barbie dolls”.
2023 was a year full of iconic movie and TV show releases, which made the Golden Globes on January 7, 2024, a ceremony full of appreciation for the work of movie producers, directors, actors, etc. Hopefully, 2024 will be a year just as full of hard work from the people who work hard to bring characters to life.
