Thanksgiving has always been a holiday where friends, and family come together, spend time with each other, and catch up with each other. Everyone enjoys eating lots of food and dessert, but oftentimes the main reasoning behind thanksgiving is forgotten. It’s a holiday created for gratitude, and giving thanks for the opportunities, and blessings we have received throughout our lives. It’s an amazing reminder to be thankful for what you have even if its very little.
Back in 1621 when thanksgiving was created, there was a harvest feast shared between the Wampanoag people, and the English colonists we now know as pilgrims today. It is a holiday that occurs every year on Thursday November 23rd. It became an American holiday created for a Harvest feast to celebrate their very first harvest in America. The feast lasted a total of 3 days, where 93 Wampanoag Native Americans and 53 American mayflower survivors attended the large celebration.
This national holiday is mainly celebrated in the United States and Canada mostly known for acknowledging the many blessing the people share throughout their lives as a yearly reminder. It’s known as time to gather with family and friends to share a traditional yearly meal most look forward to. A College student Anna Mattice, 20 years old who is attending COC stated, “My favorite tradition is going over to my grandma’s house every year and then going around the table with family and asking each other what we’re thankful for”. Being thankful can help with many things including improving your health, and dealing with adversity. Most of the famous and popular traditional meals families will share generally are, turkey meals, stuffing, gravy, sweet potatoes, mashed potatoes, and cranberry sauce which are only a few popular meals. Thanksgiving is not just an American tradition, Canada, Grenada, Saint Lucia, Liberia, and unofficially in countries like Brazil and the Philippines people often will celebrate this holiday.
It’s a holiday many love, and appreciate due to the time spent with loved ones, memories created, and the yummy food shared amongst the family table. It’s the best reminder to be grateful for even the little things people may have. The annual holiday will always be a special one to the United States, a hopeful reminder where the country started from the beginning and how much it’s grown sense 1621.
