Santa Clarita’s What The Truck is an event where a variety of food trucks come together at Real Life Church. In addition to providing food they also offer a Dj who plays remixed songs of older music. They have seating as well, but it is extremely limited so most people either go back to their car to eat or share seating with other people who they do not know. Also if you decide to eat at the tables that they have provided, “expect to be dining with a swarm of flies”, former Saugus student Isabella Rivas shares. She also added “there were too many flies around to enjoy the meal”
They have a variety of food options at What The Truck including Burgers, Caribbean, Japanese, Mexican food and even dessert trucks. The truck I ended up eating from was the Birrieria San Marcos truck. I got Birra, which is a meat made out of goat, beef, lamb, mutton, and chicken. Me and my friends personally got Birria de Asada which is beef. We also got Birria Ramen but the noodles were pretty stale and slightly uncooked, and the flavor was too subtle to feel ethnic. Former Saugus student Isabella Rivas agreed stating “ the noodles weren’t that good either.” Another meal we got was a Torta which is a sandwich but on Mexican loaf bread that was also filled with Birria. The Torta was super dry and just like the Birria Ramen the flavor was bland and did not feel authentic. I also had the Queso Taco, which was delicious, the cheese was melted thoroughly throughout the taco and the flavor was much better than the other food we had. They also had a Birria Torta which was alright you just had to put a lot of lime on because the Birra inside was quite dry. My favorite meal we got from the truck was Quesa Birria, which is beef folded into tortillas with melted cheese. This was by far the best out of all the food, the flavor was so much more authentic and rich then the other food. For my drink I got Horchata, which is a drink made out of rice grain, cinnamon, milk, and sugar. The Horchata was very sweet with a prominent cinnamon taste but overall it was delicious. Senior Mia Kaulbalk joined me at What The Truck and shared “I think the food was okay, the Quesa Birria was good but the ramen looked like it was just pre-packaged ramen noodles cooked in the microwave. It tasted okay but definitely needed more seasoning such as lime which we put a lot in there. I feel that the atmosphere was pretty good, there was music and the people seemed to enjoy it but I think they should add more seating and definitely do something about the flys. It’s a good meal to take home but I wouldn’t recommend eating there if you hate flies.”
Overall, What the Truck was a fun experience and a great event to visit in Santa Clarita. The variety of trucks, meeting new people, and trying new foods with friends is something I would definitely recommend. What the truck happens twice a month and if you are interested in coming you should look on the What’s up SCV website to catch the times and dates for What the truck.
