Saugus’s Varsity ended last year with a great season and went 5-1 in their league games, leading fans to wonder what’s happening in the 2023 season. Since the last season many of the varsity players have graduated but lots of new players have come in. This includes the new freshmen who have had a great season so far. Fans were confused when they heard that they were pulling athletes from JV to play with frosh, people have questioned what the reason is behind this. One worry from parents and players is that this could lead to many players not receiving a lot of playing time to none which could upset people.
The Frosh-Soph game on the 14th ended with a score of 22-30, Valencia taking the win. Parents who were at the game on September 14th were very upset that the Frosh and JV were combined. Out of the entire JV team there was only a small amount of players who actually received playing time that game. As for the rest of the team they did not get to play at all that week after canceling their game. The Frosh team’s next game was on September 21st against West Ranch and JV’s was the next day against Santa Paula. As for the game on the 21st ending with a final score of 6-28, West Ranch, both the Frosh and JV played together. The amount of playing time the JV players received is unknown based on how much they received at the game the week prior.
Thursday night was a crazy night for the Varsity team. Their game had ended 10 minutes early with a score of 0-28, West Ranch, due to the devastating injury of the freshman Jayden Lepley. His injury of getting a shoulder to his head led him to being hospitalized. Thankfully, Lepley was responsive and conscious, leading them to believe he will have a speedy recovery. Friday night Jayden’s mom had said, “Our son Jayden is back home in good spirits after a negative CT scan and MRI results”. Saugus’ football coach Bornn states Lepley is “good to go.” Saugus is currently having their bye week, but will return to face Hart High on October 6th.
