Saugus has put in place a new phone rule making it so students’ phones have to be turned off, and in their backpacks at all times whilst in class. In my opinion, I believe this rule is not the best considering that parents need to contact their kids to pass important information that they otherwise cannot. This policy makes it almost impossible to access your phone or have communication with your parents while you are at school. When talking to Saugus student Lorenzo Rivas he said, “I don’t like the new phone rule at school because it’s hard to play games on my phone, and it’s hard to communicate with people when I need to.”
This rule is bad in my opinion because it could make students feel as if they are more stuck in class than they have already felt because of the block schedule. Block schedule is already so unenjoyable, and now this rule gets put in place that you cannot even have your phone with you while you are in class. This makes it all the worse for students at Saugus. This rule has repercussions as well, if a student is caught with their cell phone out only a few times then they shall be punished with things such as detention, getting there phone taken away for the day and having to get it picked up by an adult after school, and a parent conference with admin for simply having your phone out. It also doesn’t even matter what you had your phone out for you will still face these consequences. Since these new rules have been put into place most students at Saugus feel like these rules are not the best.

Students believe that these rules infringe on their rights completely by not letting them have any sort of access to the outside world while in class. Most students on campus also believe that the strike system for this phone rule is completely too harsh because after only a couple of strikes of just being on your phone you will have to have your phone taken while at school, and things such as parent meetings and things like that are a punishment as well. This is just resulting in more backlash from students who think these new phone rules need to go.
