Edgerunners Review
December 15, 2022
Cyberpunk: Edgerunners is an anime adaptation of the popular video game Cyberpunk 2077. The anime was released in September of this year. This anime is unlike any other, with its in-depth background art of Night City, the character’s appearance and its cinematography all around, you can really tell that this is a masterpiece. Edgerunners was created by the beloved animation company, Studio Trigger. Trigger has made countless popular animes such as Kill La Kill, Little Witch Academia, Darling in the Franxx and BNA all in which have a roughly wide fandom. The show does an excellent job of engaging the audience to Night City. It makes us feel like we’re living a dangerous life as edgerunners, commiting crime and David and his team.

Speaking of; David Martinez is the main character of this story. He starts out as a struggling student living in a low class home with his single mother. David spends his time hacking cyber wear and getting bootleg updates from his Ripperdoc, Doc. After his mom passes away in a drive-by shooting, David is invited to the world of crime by Lucy and joins a group of felons. The more we delve into the story, we see the rowdy delinquent David become one of the greatest edgerunner in all of Night City. Well..not as great as Adam Smasher of course, you’ll see why towards the end of the show.
Unlike other adaptations, Edgerunners does an amazing job of taking material from the game and integrating it into the anime. Such as Adam Smasher and Rebecca’s shotgun.
Not only that but they have also included songs from the soundtrack.
Who’s Ready for Tomorrow by RAT BOY
I Really Want to Stay at Your House by Rosa Walten
An addition to the soundtrack is This Fire by Franz Ferdinand as the anime’s opening credits.
Trigger really didn’t miss a beat with this one. It truly is (in my opinion) the best anime of 2022 and it deserves more recognition. And I highly suggest playing the TableTop game Cyberpunk 2020 and Cyberpunk 2077. Trust me, you’ll want to play after watching Edgerunners.
